Some doctors may recommend a stress test to help determine if your heart is functioning normally. This examination is sometimes called an exercise test, cardiac stress test, or treadmill test. As your body begins to work harder while you exercise, it needs more oxygen. Therefore, your heart must pump more blood. The purpose is to determine if you have a diminished blood supply in the arteries leading to the heart.

Wikipedia states,
"Exercise-induced stressors are most commonly either exercise on a treadmill or pedalling a stationary exercise bicycle ergometer.[1] The level of stress is progressively increased by raising the difficulty (steepness of the slope on a treadmill or resistance on an ergometer) and speed."
