Redefining Beauty Trends- Then and Now |
Redefining Beauty Trends
How women were expected to act, dress, and think “back then” has changed drastically in the past 70-100 years. Beauty has undergone a major transition with the advent of social media, especially Instagram.
The idea of beauty has moved from the classic time-honored traditional appeal to embracing your real self, and trying new things, as per the spirit of the times we’re living in. The fashion industry is redefining the representation of beauty. The biggest question here is what is considered ‘beautiful’ and what falls under the tag ‘ugly’?
In Egyptian culture, men and women shaved their hair and wore braided wigs instead. Ancient Greek women wore heavy unibrows and women in Japan, during the medieval era, used to shave their brows, and drew smudgy eyebrows close to their hairline. In France, during the 18th Century, women with double chins were considered beautiful.

The history of chokers goes back hundreds of years when they were worn for a number of reasons. But the style it has been worn- close fitting along the neck has remained the same since it first came into existence. It is said that choker necklaces were first seen in 1798 during the French Revolution.
Then, in 1860, they got famous during the Queen Victorian Era. In the 1940s, chokers made another comeback as “dogs’ collar”. They were beginning to be made from various materials like lace, ribbon, pearls, and diamonds. In the 1990s, chokers, again became fashionable when many celebrities spotted them.
Today, chokers are made with a combination of various textures, patterns, materials, and shades. They consist of heavy chains, strips, jewels, and pearls. It’s fascinating to learn how chokers came about 200 years ago and how they have changed over the years.
Lip Gloss
Lip gloss is a transparent and somewhat opaque color |
Lip gloss is a transparent and somewhat opaque color that gives lips a glossy surface. The first lip glosses were created for the actresses of black and white film. As those movies became famous, women wanted to imitate the film stars, and it became fully possible when Max Factor, the creator of lip gloss released his first commercial lip gloss called ‘X-Rated’ to the public.
Since that time, lip gloss has remained one of the most popular beauty items just like the butt enhancement pills that women are fantasizing about in the western world. Women in Western have gone crazy since the advent of these pills for buttock enhancement, a safer alternative to surgeries and injections.
Off-the-Shoulder Trend
The off-shoulder trend has been on and off the scene since the 1800s when Charles Frederick Worth designed dresses, many of which got featured with off-shoulder sleeves. These styles are back in the town with a storm in the fashion industry.
Crop-Tops
This tiny piece has become a major staple item over the last few years, but it is not a recent trend! Crop top and all of its various forms date back to the 1940s and have successful comebacks time and time again. During the early 1940s, the everyday crop top was often collared or short-sleeved to show some more skin. While it made a grand entry in the 1940s, it wasn’t at its peak until the 70s and 80s.
The crop tops have been around for a long time now. It seems as if the 90s kids just knew exactly how to rock the crop top!
Head Scarves
Wearing a scarf around your head is not just a fashionable accessory, but can also be very practical for protecting your perfectly styled hair from wind or rain. Headscarves were very popular from the 1940s to the 1970s, but they fell out of popularity in the 80s and 90s.
Now, though silk scarves are back, they are being worn turban-style, or as a simple headband – all inspired by vintage eras.
In the End…
We can finally come to one conclusion that everything that was once trendy and fashionable will eventually come back in style again. Although technology and innovation have allowed us to create brand-new ideas, there are some styles that are just worth keeping around. How fascinating it is to get a comeback from old-fashioned beauty trends!
