Hair Loss Treatments Recommended By The Experts

The key to treating hair loss is prevention and early detection – if you adopt healthy hair habits, the chances of hair loss are reduced and in case there is still hair loss, you need to get it identified as soon as possible. When the hair loss has only just started, you should be able to treat it much easier and in several cases, you might not even need to invest in high-end procedures.

Here are some of the most commonly suggested hair loss treatments, by experts:

Finasteride

Also known as Propecia, this medication has earned itself a bad reputation for affecting the male organs, but this is actually not completely true. While there is a minor side effect, wherein the male libido could be reduced, the actual percentage of people who face this side effect is minimal.

However, the results are real, and for almost anyone who has used finasteride, the hair growth has improved, and they have been able to notice new hair as well. Finasteride is a type II 5α-reductase inhibitor – this is an enzyme that will help convert testosterone to dihydrotestosterone or DHT.

In a situation where your hair follicles are sensitive to DHT, they will start to shrink and as they become thinner, they will fall out. Finasteride can help suppress about 70% of DHT, which means that the hair will not get thinner and you will be able to maintain your hair.

Finasteride, however, is not an over the counter drug, which means that you will need a prescription from a doctor. You need to make sure that you stick to the intake routine your doctor prescribes. The results should start to become visible in about three months.

Minoxidil

Commonly referred to as Rogaine or Regaine, this is an FDA approved medication that you can get your hands on, quite easily. Perhaps the biggest benefit of Minoxidil is that you can get it quite easily and because it’s a topical product, you can use it easily and without much hassle.

Minoxidil, wherever it is applied, will stimulate hair growth, by widening the blood vessels and allowing the flow of oxygen in a better manner. When there are more oxygen and nutrients flowing to the hair follicle, the growth will obviously be better. In most cases, the application is easy and the instructions should be given on the pack, making it easy for you to use.

And if you use it regularly and in the proper manner, you should be able to see the results in about two to six months.

  • PRP

  • PRP or platelet-rich plasma for hair loss treatment has become extremely popular in the past few years, mainly because of its efficacy and minimal side effects. Also known as vampire therapy, the procedure evolved simultaneously with the vampire facelift, which allowed for better-looking skin.
  • One of the reasons why PRP is so loved is that this is a minimally invasive procedure, the chances of any side effects are next to none and the results are real.
  • A measured amount of blood is extracted from the patient’s body and this is placed in a centrifuge, wherein the platelets are separated. The platelets are then treated with growth factors and transformed into a super serum, which is injected back into the scalp, allowing for improved growth and reduced hair loss.

  • Studies have shown that when PRP is performed in tandem with transplant procedures, the rate of graft survival improves and the transplant is much more successful. Because it is your own blood being used, there is little to worry about – there are next to no chances of any infections or allergic reactions and there is no chance of the body rejecting the treatment.
  • The procedure is only a series of injections, which means that the pain is minimal and you can be up and about in a matter of hours. As a matter of fact, you can get the procedure done during your lunch break and return to your normal routine.

  • Hair Transplant

  • In conditions where the hair loss has become extremely severe and bald patches have become evident, the only option might be a hair transplant.
  • A transplant is a big decision and you cannot take it on your own. You will need to meet a board-certified transplant surgeon, who will put you through a proper examination and then tell you whether you are a fit candidate for a transplant.

  • For a transplant to be successful, you need to meet several criteria – your hair loss needs to have stabilized, there should be clear donor and recipient areas and the donor area should have sufficient hair for a transplant.
  • One of the biggest decisions that you will need to make is which type of transplant would be best for you and this is something your surgeon will help you with. Depending on the recipient area, that is the area that needs to be covered during the transplant, your surgeon will suggest the method for you.
  •  The main choices will be between a FUT and an FUE; the former is the best option for when the recipient area is really large and the latter is the better choice when you need to create fullness. In the former procedure, a strip of hair is removed from the donor area and the follicles are extracted out of the body and then transplanted into the recipient area.
  • In the FUE procedure, grafts are extracted and implanted into the recipient area simultaneously, leaving no scars and reducing the healing time.
